In July of 2023, we began asking as many people as would take the time to answer, 'Can you relate to a feeling called "Trapped?"' We must have asked more than a hundred friends and family what comes to mind when they hear the word "Trapped." Without supplying much context, if any, most people responded by talking about their workplace.
This was uncanny. "Trapped" and "Workplace" were coming up synonymous to the average person asked. So we went beyond the average person and took our questions to the experts and the researchers.
95% of HR directors point to burnout as sabotaging the workplace. Research from Deloitte reported that 70% of senior executives were actively considering leaving the workplace for a position better for their well-being. This is 11% more than the average worker in similar workplaces, at 59%. 64% of employees are regularly burned out. 28% report being beyond burnout, in "high burnout."
The Great Resignation, Quiet Quitting, Quiet Firing, the Remote Revolt, the She-cession, daily strikes and burnout reported as the next next pandemic by the World Health Organization suggest that work is on our minds. But not for a good reason. Work seems to be an impediment to a workable life for many.
In this ferment, we have a few questions: "How Are You Surviving This?" What remedies are helping you enjoy your work as a source of life? How is worth shaping your work? What is the opposite of that trapped feeling?
We are finding a few hints at our answers, which we will tease out in successive blog posts, book recommendations and examples of people we think are getting it right.
But we would like to know your answers. In essence, thats what it means to join the WorthPlace Collective. It means sharing the insights you are are discovering at the intersection of worth and work with others who gather for courage in their own journeys. Take a look at the Pledge we have taken.
